Your Day, Wasted Away

Many times, when I sit down in the evening and reflect on my day, I often wonder “Where did the day go?”. There seem to be big blocks of time that I am not able to account for. I know that with the fast pace of today’s society, we definitely have to make the most of every moment of every day. I’ve been trying to implement this idea into my daily life.

As I write this post, I’m sitting in our vehicle, traveling 3 hours to visit my family for the weekend. This doesn’t happen often; I have 3 hours of my time that is completely blocked off. I can’t check my email; I don’t have laundry to fold, or toys to clean up. It’s just me, my family, and the open road. Usually I get more stir crazy in the car than my girls. I try to keep myself busy when traveling to maintain my sanity.

Before I started blogging, I would bring magazines, knitting projects, or coupons to cut. Blogging has opened a whole new set of possibilities for me while traveling. I can write posts, I can brainstorm, or I can proof articles that I have previously written! Honestly, what a good way to pass the time. If I write a new post, when I arrive at my parents’ house and we’ve said our hellos, I can post my articles to the net and my work definitely pays off. What used to be 3 hours of misery has turned into a 3 hour power session! Granted, I really only make this trip about once a month, but I figure that traveling this trip takes 6 hours. That’s almost a whole work day gained, just by using my time effectively.

You don’t have to be a blogger or have 3 hours of time to be able to implement this idea; any amount of time that you can maximize will obviously lead to better results. But for example, let’s say that you have to take the subway or bus to work. The trip takes anywhere from 20-45 minutes. This would be a perfect time to sit down and work on your latest knitting project, catch up on the latest Hollywood news, or (in my case) crank out a post.

Do you have another idea to make the most of your time? When traveling, what do you do to keep from boredom setting in?
